Have you say on the Smoking Policy

Following an increase in the number of students smoking outside of the designated area and vandalism to the main smoking shelter, the possibility of a complete ban on smoking at college is being considered. This would mean smoking would not be permitted at all on college grounds.

This is only a consideration at this time and we want to hear your opinions on this proposal. Please complete these few questions.

Don't worry, your answers will be anonymous and no personal details will be shared.

this is such a stupid idea banning smoking in college what's the point just because some people are smoking in the wrong areas, everyone has near enough done it anyway and for the vandalism done to the smoking shelter what's the point of having it there it offers a little bit of shelter when its raining and that's it, it offers nothing else, it could of been enclosed a bit so it would be warmer instead of it being all open and freezing cold outside its a waste of money and should of never been put there

Hey Thomas, unfortunately we are governed by law as to the level of shelter we can provide so it can't be fully enclosed. A ban is only one of the considerations, the college is looking at how we can make things fair for everyone, which is why we are putting the question out here for you guys to comment on and get opinions. It's also interesting from an equality and diversity perspective to see what the college community think of smoking in terms of it being a 'right'. Results will be published on here after the questionnaire closes.

You sound like the most ungrateful person right now. If you knew anything, you'd know that the law states it is illegal for a smoking shelter to have three fully enclosed walls. The government aren't trying to give smokers a nice, comfortable environment, like "HEY COME HERE AND KILL YOURSELF SLOWLY BY SMOKING IN A HEATED ENCLOSED AREA!"

At the end of the day it's our choice to smoke, but as it is one of the most unhealthiest things you can do, the government aren't going to make it enticing. They haven't got to give us smoking shelters at all, and for the college to fork out on a smoking shelter that actually does it's job, which is to stop you getting wet when you're having a quick ciggy, well, I think thats quite good of them.

So shut your whore mouth up and be grateful, or don't smoke.

How I see it, is that there are loads of places non-smokers can go and hang that isn't a smoking area- like the little courtyard thing near the restaurant. But nobody ever goes to these places. Smokers gun' smoke.

hehe, they sure are and don't get me wrong, we're not saying people should smoke but by the same token we're not policing people's personal choices, just getting your opinions as a college 'community' so that our policy can reflect those views (in line with legislation).

I think changing the smoking area is a stupid idea, its fine where it is. Its enclosed and out of the eye of the public. If college were to be banned on college grounds it means everyone will be loitering outside by the roundabout, and what image is that for the college. For the people that don't smoke, don't go outside, simple really. No ones forcing you to go outside in the smoking area. Another thing the old smoking area was fine, but the restaurant got built. No matter where the smoking area is there will be people that will take advantage, but that's no reason to punish everyone who hasn't done anything. The problem with the litter is that the bins aren't in the smoking area, if more bins were in the smoking area, and under the shelter then the litter problem will be solved. Vandalism can be solved by punishing the ones involved not everyone.

if you ban smoking on college grounds imagine what would happen with those of us that do smoke, you would end up with students raging and walking off site just to have a fag, most of us smoke to calm down not because it's cool we actually need it, banning it would result in students being kicked out of college because they will end up being rude or starting fights just so they can get sent off site, so they can have a fag.

Getting some really interesting results from the survey and great comments on here too. Going to close the survey at the end of the week so I can post the results for you all to see and comment on before they are sent upstairs.

Students don't really have a right to smoke, they choose to smoke.

The smoking area SHOULD be moved further away from the building.
